These are just a few statistics to give you an idea of what the foster care system looks like. Some of the facts about ages and adoption really shocked me, and it just shows how much of a need there is in the field of foster care. Did any of these percentages surprise you?

Percentages of Children in Foster Care.
More boys are in the foster care system than girls, being 52% to 48%. In the system, 43% of foster children are white, 24% are African American, and 21% are Hispanic or of other race. The average age of a child entering foster care is 6 to 7. A whopping 25% of children entering foster care are under the age of one, and another 25% are age 13 and older. 51% of children in foster care reunify with their parents or primary caregivers. A massive 49% of foster children are adopted by a foster parent.
